        Samhain Night
How did I get myself into this? Cassie asked herself, Of all the nights for Eric to have other plans. He chooses this one.
She looked at the three princesses. How could she be angry, her nieces are adorable? Sarah is seven, Allie is six and little Manda, is five. Auntie Cassie is always ready to take care of them, considering Eric had taken such good care of her when she was younger. It was only right. However, she still couldnt shake the feeling that Eric was being insensitive about this night.
As they approached the final house on the street by the beach, Cassie sighed, The last one, then home to bed.
Manda was getting tired, but Sarah and Allie were ready to go. They tried to convince their aunt that somewhere there were more houses with more candy. Cassie rolled her eyes and said Girls you have enough candy here to last you til Christmas.
Jingling their UNICEF boxes, Sarah said, But these arent filled yetand we promised that we would come back with them full.
Nice try Sarah, but this is the last one, make it count.
The girls knew that this was the end of the conversation. So they approached the door, Sara rang the bell, and Allie, to make sure that they were heard, knocked. It opened with a creak and a mass of curls. There was a man in a monkey mask. Manda shrieked as it spoke. Welcome, welcome, welcome to our maze. Are you ready to be scared?
The girls replied with screams of delight. I guess you have your answer, Mr. Monkey smiled Cassie.
They entered what under normal circumstances would be the living room, but it had been transformed into a maze. The monkey showed the way; first they went left and were hit by a strobe light. Then onto the right, Cassie had to duck, while the disco ball was dropped. Full of twist and turns, the young ones were in delight. About halfway through, they met up with a Scarecrow and a Puppy. When Cassie turned around the Monkey was gone; the colors changed again to psychedelics when they started to follow the Puppy. Speaking with an accent Puppy said The end is in sight, only a few more turns, an ere we are, all safe and sound.
What they found when they emerged was a table, three bowls and Abe Lincoln. Abe started telling the girls that these bowls contained Frankensteins brain, the Mummys guts and Bats eyes. Manda didnt want any part of this, but the other two were quite game. They got all the answers right. All of a sudden, the lights came on, the girls squealed as they found their dad standing beside Abe.
Eric, what are you doing here? Cassie asked over the squeals.
He replied I knew that your last stop was by the beach, and I figured that it would be easier if I picked them up. Being that it is a full moon and all.
Thank you so much Eric. If I leave right now, then I can be in time to help set up. She turned to the costumed fellows and said Thank you for the amazing entertainment. I enjoyed myself as much as the girls did.
Before the boys could take off their masks and respond, she had disappeared. When Allie saw them without the masks, she exclaimed, Youre The Monkees!
Davy replied with a grin, Yes we are, little one, but ow did you know?
Eric took over and explained that the Abbots had them play at one of their parties. Thinking back, he believed that it was on Labor Day.
Ahhh, thats it, the stuffy house where we were crammed into the den. And there were three girls peaking down the stairs, Micky recalled. The girls just giggled.
There was a bit more conversation about the party, and then Eric said good bye and guided his daughters away. Mike and Micky started to clean up the room, while Davy and Peter changed out of their costumes. As Davy came downstairs, he noticed the other three looking at the beach. They stood at the window, looking out, confused. It was a clear night, but there was a mist and a strange orange glow in the distance. They decided to investigate.
The full moon rose out of the ocean, shining brightly. Illuminating the shoreline as the night mist climbed over the grains of sand. Micky and Davy shivered - Peter felt it also. Mike, the logical one, dismissed it. Then they saw and had to believe their eyes. They came upon a fire surrounded by four girls, one of which was Cassie.
Mike called out, Hello?
Cassie turned and replied, Greetings Abe.
Call me Mike, and this is Davy, Peter and Micky, pointing to the other three.
We sort of met earlier, I am Cassie, and these three are Ari, Samatha and Alycia. Each one of the girls nodded when their name was called, with Samatha requesting to be called Sam.
If you dont mind me asking, what are you doing out here? Mike inquired.
Cassie smiled and replied, This is a very special night when the veil between our world and the spirit world is thin. Allowing us to communicate with family who have passed before us. She paused, continuing only when she saw that there was no more fear in the fellows eyes. Tonight, as you know, is Halloween or All Hallows Eve. For us it is the beginning of our New Year, we call it Samhain.
Micky, being Micky interjected, So basically you talk to the dead. Why dont you just use a Oujii board?
Because when you use one of those, you can not control who you contact, it is a very unsafe practice. Ari explained, What we do, is a very controlled atmosphere, contacting only those that we know. For example, I have a question to ask my great grandmother, since she passed before I was born, I could never ask. This gives me the opportunity. Of course, she is not going to appear before our eyes, but by tomorrow an answer will have woven its way into my consciousness.
At this point Cassie continued, Would you like to join us?
Im not sure. Should we? Davy asked.
After hearing this, Sam took off in fits of laughter; Cassie signaled Alycia to go after her sister. Ari, who is embarrassed by Sam, replied Sorry about that, you are welcome to join. We practice an earth based religion, honoring those who have walked before us.
Peter spoke softly Will the balance be upset if we join?
No, not at all, this ritual is designed to fit any number of people. Our other friends had to work, so we were all that could make it, until you. If you accept that is. Cassie thinks for a minute and added, We have a few more things to get ready, why dont you think about it, then let us know.
When the set up was finished the boys had an answer. Mike told the girls that it would be an honor to attend. Sam and Alycia arrive just in time to hear that. All Sam could say was Its about time.
Behave Samatha. Alycia warned.
All are welcome as long as you enter with an open mind and love in your heart. Entering the circle of your own free will, will ensure positive energy for what we are embarking on. Cassie told each who entered.
As the circle is cast, Cassie informed the boys that she would answer any questions during the feast, and they were welcome to take part in as much or as little, as they wanted. Ari took over calling the corners and starting to draw the collective energies together. In a singsong voice, Alycia read a blessing chant by Scott Cunningham.
On this night of Samhain I mark your passing,
O Sun King, through the sunset into the Land of the Young.
I mark also the passing of all who have gone before,
and all who will go after. O Gracious Goddess,
Eternal Mother, You who gives birth to the fallen,
teach me to know that in time of the greatest
darkness there is the greatest light.
Giving each person a chance to reflect on those who have passed, Cassie starts singing Merry Meet, Merry Part, and Merry Meet Again. Since it is sung in a round form, soon all joined in. It is then that Cassie took Davys hand and started the spiral dance. Spiraling around the fire, everyone danced. Soon hands were free and each one began stepping to their own inner dance. The spirits were thanked for their time, and the circle opened, then the feast began. There was a myriad of foods including Crescent cakes, apples, pomegranates, pumpkin-pie, and apple cider.
Alycia and Sam began distributing the cider, while the others filled their plates. Cassie soon found herself seated by Mike and Peter.
Did you enjoy yourselves? she inquired.
Yes, very educational. Mike replied and continued You said that youd answer questions, so here goes. What did I feel?
As I explained, we raised energy together. It allowed me to open up to any advice my parents have to offer. Then I thanked them for Eric, since he is so good to me.
That would explain why I started thinking about my great grand mother, Peter surmised.
It is not unusual for an elder to make contact during this time, I would consider yourself very blessed. She must have wanted to speak with you. Make sure that you all eat and drink well after a ritual it is very important to ground or make sure that the energy level calms back down.
Smiling Micky says Aha that explains why I have this funny disconnected feeling.
Everyone laughs as Micky, who had pulled his shirt over his head, start running around yelling, Come back here head, I need you!
Normalcy arrived as Sam and Alycia start complaining that they are board. Ari tell them that if they cleaned and put away the altar, then they were free. Once they finished, they returned and hugged everyone saying good bye. Then out of thin air, Sam does the unimaginable; she apologized for her prior attitude. Davy winked and told her that all was well. She left giggling like a schoolgirl.
You should consider yourselves very lucky, Sam never accepts anyone on the first meeting, let alone apologize. Ari then signaled Cassie that it is time to clean up.
How did you do tha? Davy asked.
What? The signal?
Yea. Its like you can read er mind or somethin.
Oh, we have been through this for many moons, explained Cassie. And we have also been brought together by circumstances. It has been nice having you here but you dont have to stay; we just have to finish cleaning up.
No, well help, offers Mike.
After cleaning up, Mike invited the girls back to the flat, saying that it was the least they could do after such an experience. While walking back, Peter asked, Where did the mist go?
After pondering the proper response, Ari replied, It dissipated. No one asked for more of an explanation.
Once at the flat, Ari and Mike went off to discuss music his and hers. While Micky and Davy hurried off, as they had dates, Peter excused himself.
Here we go again, everyone has something better to do than spend time with Cassie. she thinks. As she wandered around the place, she was amazed that only two hours before there was a maze here. Soon she found herself outside, on the deck. She was still there when Peter came looking for her. He couldnt believe his ears, when he heard her singing Shades of Gray. A song that they have only performed once, he asked, How do you know that?
You played it at the Abbots party. When I heard it, I fell in love with it. Do you mind?
No, not at all. But I dont remember you being there.
That would be because I was upstairs taking care of the girls. Before you ask, I was not invited. Eric insisted that, I, passing my appearance off as the nanny, be there. At least that is what he told his in-laws.
Oh, well. Anyway, earlier you said that we could ask you, well, umm
Yes, Peter, is there something you want to know? Just come out and say it, I will tell you if there is some reason I wont answer, I will tell you.
Are you a witch? Peter asked sheepishly.
Yes.
Eric?
Eric is special, while being born an empath, he found that he had more of a connection with Christianity. Cassie continued by explaining that their grandmother was a healer, mama used the Tarot and that her father and grandfather had their own abilities. The most important thing is that Eric accepts the family for what they were, and doesnt judge me for following my heart.
Cassie turned away from Peter, as she continued, See my father and grandfather were killed in an accident twelve days before I was born. Aside from my dreams, I never knew them. Mama and Gama both passed over when I was twelve, leaving Eric to care for me. He was eighteen, putting aside his wants and needs.
Peter came up beside her, and saw the tear. Not wanting to see anyone up set, he faded the conversation into other topics. Soon the smile had returned to her eyes.
Davy and Micky were arguing when they returned, it appeared that Mickys date got all starry-eyed over Davy. He stated that this was the last time he would ever go on a double date with him! Davy retorted with a I cant elp it When Mike and Ari heard the ruckus they came downstairs. It was then that everyone noticed the time, it was after midnight.
Ari said her good byes hugging each one, with kiss for Mike. Cassie in turn also hugged them. When she got to Peter, he said Thank you for opening up to me. She touched his face and left.
Weeks passed, and the boys hadnt seen the girls anywhere but they could still feel the experience of that Samhain Night. Sometimes Peter could still feel warmth where Cassie touched his cheek.
